- Type: Education
- Track: Diversity‚ Equity‚ Inclusion‚ & Belonging
- Format: Snap Sessions
Organizations are focusing more and more on DEI&B – but with the renewed focus, the approach hasn’t changed much. ERGs continue to be an afterthought. Lean is typically seen as a tool to help manufacturing operations be more efficient. And it is – but can is be used in spaces outside the shop floor to help advance the goal of diversity, equity, inclusion, and allyship. The session will focus on how our Women’s Network has used classic lean tools like standard work, value stream mapping and BOB/WOW analysis, to improve engagement and belonging across our organization.

Speak up! Whether you are advocating for yourself or for a collective, at its core, advocacy is often about speaking up. You need to use your voice, and you have to develop it in order to use it effectively. Having a voice is perhaps more important than having a seat at the table – it’s about engaging with others to impact change, encouraging ones-self to speak up and feeling empowered to do so. In many ways, there has never been a better time to bring up rational, creative, and innovative ideas for positive change – be it to influence the way we work, cultures we cultivate, or purpose we pursue. Against the backdrop of her own journey, and with examples from her long career, Jayshree will share a simple framework to access, develop, and use your voice to advocate and impact change. Afterall, it is time to come off mute!

As the corporate environment has shifted to include remote work, there has been a disturbing trend of disengagement and quiet quitting due to employees experiencing a lack of motivation and connection. In 2021, to reengage and reconnect our work community, we developed a Lean In program for our company headquarters that is open to every employee, regardless of age, gender, or role in the organization. This program creates an environment where we provide: peer mentoring across all platforms and business units, challenge unconscious bias and create a network of allies, and provide professional development opportunities focusing on motivation and highlighting contributions. Celebrating the third successful year with 15 Lean In Circles and 135 members annually, participants credit their experience as enabling them to gain confidence in achieving their personal and professional goals. We are excited to share our best practices with the broader community and help other organizations Lean In.

Human Factors engineering can champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B). It does this in two ways, through its iterative process and through building unique skillsets. Human Factors engineering enables rapid iteration, validates key business assumptions, reduces risk, and ensures cross-functional team alignment through the eyes of the customer. At its core though, Human Factors is all about representing diverse opinions to ensure a product works for all users. Let’s discuss how an Agile approach to Human Factors allows you to develop skillsets unique to other engineering fields. This workshop connects these skillsets to principles of DEI&B and product development methodology.

Digital accessibility is increasingly a hot topic as public awareness grows and legal and contractual requirements proliferate. To be truly compliant, accessible solutions require more than just strong color contrast and clear alt text for images. Just as there are many types of disabilities (including permanent, temporary and situational), there are many varied and sometimes contradicting needs that users have from the digital interfaces they’re working with. Understanding and designing flexible, accessible solutions is both a moral imperative and an opportunity for companies to improve their designs for all users.

Most people kickstart their day with a nice cup of coffee. Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, impacting economics, politics, and technology. It is predicted that in 2050, half of the coffee-growing regions will be unusable, and the demand for coffee will have doubled. This decline could mean a shift in how we store and consume coffee. Brewing accounts for coffee’s color, flavor, aroma, and texture. With the variety of coffee brewing from around the world, the future of coffee could already be out there. From pour over to nitro brew, this session will look at past brewing trends and techniques and integrate them with current technology to look at what a new coffee future looks like. Will captured carbon dioxide lead to a rise in carbonated coffee? Feel free to enjoy your favorite caffeinated beverage as we explore the future of coffee.

The Cost of Mental Health: What Do You Owe, is an informative reflection on the negative behaviors and actions we exhibit to prove our worth in engineering. Whether it be an undergraduate student about to embark on their career in engineering or a tenured professional looking at the prospects of retiring, we as women minimize ourselves to make others more comfortable in exchange for our mental health. Throughout this talk, we will acknowledge detrimental behaviors such as overworking ourselves and internalizing criticism. In addition to that, we will discuss the strengths of our individual backgrounds and our intersectionality. By doing this, we can identify positive actions to better help our mental health and better the collective mental health of women in the engineering spaces we proudly occupy.

In a rapidly changing technology sector, it is key for engineers to manage company assets with robust lifecycle plans that optimize operational and financial investments. A successful asset management strategy requires clearly defined asset policies, governance and control standards to move assets onto a planned maintenance and replacement path, to mitigate unforeseen disruptions and losses, moving assets on to a strategic plan and away from a default position of “run until it fails” position. No matter what type of engineering role an employee holds within the organization, they can show leadership in the context of asset management in their area. With over 30 years of experience in various industries, Tracy is an established professional that will share the pillars, application and benefits of having an asset management strategy and the importance of all roles in a business to support the management of corporate assets.

The expansion and transformation of the hydrogen economy is a critical component of decarbonizing our existing energy system. Hydrogen today is generated largely through steam-methane reforming (SMR) technology which has a large carbon footprint associated with production. Because of this, blue and green hydrogen have recently taken center stage in the journey to reach net zero. In the near term, low carbon hydrogen can be used in producing traditional and renewable fuels. Looking ahead, these technologies have the potential to form new markets, and to integrate with various industries including steel and cement. Join two hydrogen process engineers as they discuss these technologies, their future potential and uses, as well as the skills needed to succeed in the hydrogen economy.

In a world defined by new threats, competitors, and opportunities to advance the needs and aspirations of the American people, the renewal and reorientation of American foreign policy is vital and urgent. At the heart of this realignment are STEM policy and disciplines, particularly engineering, to ensure continued U.S. strategic leadership in critical and emerging technologies, cyberspace and digital policy, global health security, and climate and energy among other key issues. Achieving these goals also requires we strengthen and expand our critical infrastructure in information technology, cybersecurity, physical security, countering technical espionage, and facility construction and maintenance. American engineers can play an important role in this effort through public-private partnership and contributing to a Federal workforce that fully represents the American people and its rich diversity and talents to meet global challenges. This panel will focus on STEM in foreign affairs and opportunities that exist at the Department of State.

Conversations about maternity leave have gained prominence in recent years, but they often don’t go beyond the leave period. There is a need to discuss how to support women when they return to work after having a newborn. New mothers often face various other physical and emotional challenges, apart from postpartum depression, which often go unrecognized, due to a lack of awareness. Awareness is the first step to providing the necessary support. It is vitally important to start discussions, share experiences, and brainstorm ideas, to develop policies that address postpartum complications, beyond the leave period. These conversations about supporting women, as they return to work, are essential to help them thrive in the workplace. Better support leads to better employee satisfaction and only then, can we create, an environment that encourages the success of women, leading to a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

The challenge I am addressing is that ineffective communication impacts engineers’ performance and career advancement. Communication is the essence of life, allowing us to express feelings, pass on information and share thoughts. Effective communication is the process whereby the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose. K.I.S.S stands for Keep It Simple Sweetheart. Engineers should always apply the K.I.S.S principle in their communication, i.e., comprehend and compose the message they want to convey in a simple way with an understanding of the audience’s background. This can significantly improve the effectiveness of the communication. However, as Einstein said: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. In the session, I will share my personal experience as examples to elaborate the engineer version of effective communication with K.I.S.S principle applied.

Building a productive, inclusive, diverse, and happy environment is critical for individuals, teams, and organizations. Having well-thought-out and fair interview practices, reducing biases, is critical to promoting equity and inclusion in the organization when building teams. Interview feedback should be based on observable facts from different perspectives, not on feelings. Editorializing on someone’s psyche or value system can be prejudicial, especially in written feedback if the interviewer is not present during discussion sessions. In this session, two leaders will share their experience, one who has years of experience interviewing candidates with and without a standard process and one who was recently hired using our standard process. Session attendees will understand how interview practices can impact diversity and equity and learn how to apply them to enhance their process.

Returning to work can be one of the most personal life decisions a mother can make. Depending on the woman’s business, role, and location, the facility may be suited for welcoming her back at this transitional phase of life – but many are not. To make going from maternity to “returnity” a bit less stressful, we will cover topics integrated by women who lived through it and then employed lean methodology to enable their company to better support employees returning and still nursing their new babes. Come hear examples of pilot programs and policies implemented at a large corporate site of 2500+ employees (including a nursing baby access program, mother’s room upgrades, and shipment of breastmilk during business travel). These working moms will also share examples of where they personally experienced the maternal wall bias and strategies for how they dealt with it.

When most people think about the rail industry, they immediately think of a train engineer, wearing his pin-striped hat. They certainly don’t think of the groundbreaking technological advancements, the sustainability of the movement of goods and people or the changing face of the industry. In truth, the foundation of rail is rooted in a predominantly male workforce wielding sledgehammers and stoking coal fueled engines, but that’s not today’s rail industry. This session will share thoughts from the women who are leading the revolution of an almost 200-year-old industry, transforming it with state-of-the-art technology partnered with admirable sustainability goals. Rail companies are at the precipice of monumental change as they drive to improved environmental impact and a more diverse workforce. These women have been on the rail journey for many years and will provide insight into why female engineers are needed to lead the rail industry into the next generation.

Our names are the connection to our heritage, our ancestors, and our identities, but often we shrink ourselves to assimilate to western norms. For many people of color, first interactions are stressful: should we pronounce our name the ethnic way, or go about making it easier for other people? Are their mistakes even worth correcting? Or should we just carry on with our day? From simply giving a pseudo-name at Starbucks when ordering your daily coffee to change the name on a resume with the hopes of a better chance of hiring, many BIPOC community members feel the pressure to accommodate. In this session, we will explore the complex relationships many historically-excluded individuals share with their names and the experiences felt by many.

According to UN General Assembly President Maria Espinoza, we only have a decade left to prevent irreversible damage from climate change. Studies show that disadvantaged communities are often at the forefront of these consequences; impacts such as localized air pollution can cause lung damage and heart disease. The U.S. has established decarbonization goals to combat this; legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Justice 40 Initiative will pour $7 Billion in tax credits across the nation to electrify trucks and buses, while ensuring that 40% of the overall incentives serve the most critically disadvantaged first. In this session, attendees will learn about how public and private partnerships collaborate at the forefront of these issues and their approach toward the decisions involved in electrifying the U.S., including how transportation electrification will help save lives, how the most impact can be made, and how equity and justice help shape this conversation.

What exactly are non-promotable tasks? Non-promotable tasks are those that benefit the organization but don’t contribute to an employee’s career advancement. So you may ask well “Why should I say no if it benefits the organization?”. Well, these tasks may include planning a holiday party or serving on a low-level committee. Studies have found that women are 48% more likely to say yes when asked or even volunteer for these tasks. Also, if there was no volunteer, then women received 44% more requests than men to take on these tasks. Women will continue to progress more slowly if they hold a portfolio of non-promotable tasks. Tune into this session to learn how to say “no” and improve your career trajectory.

We have all had to work with challenging people on our projects—those who are too aggressive or too passive, condescending, argumentative, or simply do not have the skills required to get the job done effectively. They can be on our own teams or on teams we collaborate with. They can put our projects at risk, adversely impact the value of our work, erode our self-confidence, and hurt our morale. Using a series of concrete case studies and anecdotes focused on system development in the homeland security field, we explore how both a system engineer and a manager have faced all of these challenges and what we have done both individually and in partnership to overcome them. We address committing to continuous professional development so our skills are undeniable; taking strategic leadership and welcoming accountability; communicating clearly; adapting our own working styles; and the importance of providing mutual support.

This technology is not only deployed by public carriers such as AT&T or Verizon, but it can also be harnessed by power utilities to build robust networks. For example, San Diego Gas and Electric is building out their own private LTE network in remote areas to mitigate fallen power lines from causing destructive wildfires. In this session, we’ll explain why utility clients can benefit from building and owning their own private networks, how utilities determine the best strategies to interconnect their locations, and why 4G-LTE can trump 5G.

College students and young professionals are overwhelmed. 59% of college students feel unprepared to enter the workforce and nearly half the student population are the first in their family to attend college – all in a market where 85% of jobs are being filled via networking. To make matters worse, they’re being fed the falsehood that everyone is getting job offers and promotions through the highlight reels on social media. Our session will introduce the concept of building and managing a Personal Advisory Board. We’ll start with debunking the myth of being self-made by providing high-profile examples of successful individuals’ support teams, then provide detailed guidance on how to build and effectively manage your own personal advisory board to help on your personal and professional journeys. We’ll also include a fun “building your dream board” exercise to get you thinking about what roles would benefit you.

- Type: Education
- Track: Diversity‚ Equity‚ Inclusion‚ & Belonging
- Format: Listen & Learn Lecture
Increasing diversity in technical careers while maintaining historical white male leadership can cause conflict without understanding unconscious bias about race, gender, and age. This lack of understanding can create underlying tension that negatively affects engagement and effectiveness at work. The speakers will explain how they addressed this by creating a committee called Courageous Conversations to facilitate structured conversations on unconscious bias. These sessions were voluntary for those who were curious about how their unconscious biases influenced the way they interacted with their coworkers. These conversations created a safe venue for minorities to air their concerns, share their perspective, and be heard, while also allowing non-minorities to do the same. As a result, these conversations increased trust and improved work environments for those who participated. This session will walk through how the speakers created a safe space for colleagues to have a Courageous Conversation, and how you can do the same.

The decisions that affect lives across the globe in big and small ways are are all impacted by the data that is used to come to those decisions. This is especially true with regards to algorithms and models that run the technology that have become essential to our day to day lives. If that data is biased, inaccurate, manipulated, or otherwise used unethically, then it means dire consequences for many. As women, we have likely experienced the impact of inequitable data systems and so we have a responsibility to model equitable and ethical data practices for us and other marginalized communities. This talk will cover what an ethical data culture is, why it is so important, examples of unethical data usage, and how we model ethical data practices.

Currently, Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) is primarily derived from the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS). However, these signals are vulnerable to jamming and spoofing. Additionally, GNSS PNT devices are becoming increasingly more vulnerable as counter-PNT technology evolves, placing many critical infrastructures – such as power grids, banking systems and communications networks – at risk. As threats continue to grow, alternative technologies – including low Earth orbit satellites – are being examined for use when GPS is unavailable or corrupted. This session will focus on various techniques being explored to provide robust solutions for systems that are dependent on PNT. It will also take a closer look at how performance requirements are impacting technology development and implementation in this important area while examining the challenges and opportunities of alternative low Earth orbit navigation.

We always strive to do the best for our work and life every day, but it is also important to ask the why: why we want to design, develop, research, and build, and what positive impact it can bring. The best tool to answer this question is to use the universal skill we all have within ourselves, empathy! Empathy is our ability to see the world through other people’s eyes — to see what they see and feel how they feel. Empathy is crucial to a user-centered design process as it helps you set aside your assumptions to gain insight into the users instead. Empathy can be integrated as an essential component of business solutions when you look at things from an innovation opportunities perspective. In this session, you will learn how to use the empathy ecosystem to spark tremendous creativity within yourself and lead diversified global teams successfully!

- Type: Education
- Track: Technical Innovations
- Format: Snap Sessions
As a bridge technology between high energy demand and low environmental impact, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is key for tackling climate change in an affordable way, delivering economic growth and regional prosperity. A suite of traditional technologies from other industries are pivoting their applications during the energy transition process. One example: Reservoir simulation. In this session, learn about how the skills required from traditional oil and gas reservoir simulations can be transformed into essential skills for CCS. Reservoir simulation is an integrated product of the efforts of geology, petrophysics, reservoir and production engineering, and computer science. As a widely used method in oil and gas industries, reservoir simulations are playing irreplaceable roles during the entire CCS projects, from geological site development, to testing, monitoring and corrective action plans. Now it is time for all of us to think out of box and transition the application of our skills!

ChatGPT, DALL-E, BingAI – these are names that may be new for many of us, but in the past few months have presented an exciting opportunity for everyone to interact with emerging technology. In late 2022, ChatGPT took the world by storm, and set a record for the fastest user growth when it reached 100 million active users only two months after launch. Before more of us begin to adopt these new tools, we must question their limitations, and learn ways to responsibly use AI to augment our tasks. In this snap session, follow Ebenezer Scrooge (from the Christmas Carol fame), as he visits the year 2023 to learn about exciting emerging technologies. With Scrooge you will quickly answer three questions – What do generative AIs really do? How were they invented and first programmed? And in the future, will they really, truly out-think humans and replace us?

Employees are 9.8 times more likely to look forward to going to work if they have this one thing. It’s not unlimited breakroom snacks. It’s not a ping-pong table. It’s trust that they’ll receive fair treatment. Employees don’t just expect; they have an intrinsic right to inclusion and care in the workplace. And companies are rapidly enhancing their vision of the ideal employee culture with new benefits and policies that shape a culture of empowerment. In this talk, Mai Lan Nguyen, SVP, Human Resources, Schneider Electric, will share the process, tools, pain points, successes, hopes, and lessons learned from building a people culture that’s easy, digital, and inclusive by design from the shop floor to the top floor.

This session will cover how imperfect allies can deliver on strong diversity and inclusion milestones even if they are not directly managing a team. Participants will walk away with a set of realistic tools they can apply in their work life to generate change. No perfection necessary. While inaction is the enemy of creating a culture of belonging and inclusion amongst allies. Without nurturing one of the pivotal foundations through which equity can be attained, organizations and teams unknowingly stay on perpetual state of pause on their diversity metrics. Over the last several years, many companies have made great strides in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion of marginalized groups in the workplace, but these efforts are frequently targeted towards singular identities; for instance, female, black, or disabled employees. While these initiatives have undoubtably improved company culture and employee engagement, they risk leaving some behind. What good is a robust mentoring program if none of the mentors speak your language? How can someone take advantage of expanded healthcare coverage if they can’t even get to the doctor? By learning about intersectionality and applying it in a wholistic manner to DE&I initiatives, companies can ensure that the time and money directed towards making the workplace more inclusive is well spent. This applies on a personal level tool! Culture is built and felt on an individual level, and when individuals feel empowered to work towards clearing roadblocks, everyone benefits.

Science proved that men and women think differently, so it’s not surprising that they communicate differently, too. How you sit, how you walk, how you talk, and what you say are associated with gender norms. Falling within or outside of those norms can convey very different messages. The business world also has gender favoritism with its language and structure. You know what intelligence quotient (IQ) is and may already be familiar with the concept of emotional intelligence (EQ), but what do you know about gender intelligence (GQ)? Is that even a real thing? Take the gender intelligence quiz and learn where your GQ rates. Next, identify ways to improve your GQ. Maybe men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but you can learn to interpret each other’s language. So whether you speak Martian or Venusian, it’s time to learn the other language with lessons in gendered communication.

As local governments confront complex policy challenges, the need for data-based solutions is essential. However, data is often incomplete, and successfully using the data that is available can be administratively challenging for local policymakers who are ill-equipped to fully leverage the information at their fingertips. This creates a valuable opportunity for engineers and other STEM professionals to contribute their expertise to improve their communities. Los Angeles has made progress towards integrating a data-based approach in its government operations, bringing together community stakeholders and technical experts to address issues in public health, social justice, and beyond. In this session, attendees will hear from professionals at the forefront of these efforts in Los Angeles which, in combination with resources from Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL), will provide the inspiration and tools attendees need to drive data-informed decision-making in their own communities.

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are critical to solving today’s problems. Overcoming challenges like natural disasters, poverty, cyberwarfare, climate change, and declining resources will rely on people employed in STEM fields to provide a comprehensive view of the problems along with specialized knowledge and the vision to help build a better future. As a result, there has been exponential growth in STEM occupations; over the last thirty years, employment in STEM occupations has grown 79% and is projected to continue to grow. Despite this rapid growth, women remain vastly underrepresented in the STEM workforce, in holding STEM degrees, and in opportunities to develop STEM interest as youth. How do we dismantle the gender gap that is perpetuated by gender stereotypes, male-dominated STEM culture(s), and the gap in female role models? To address the gender gap in STEM requires starting early and investing in STEM opportunities for girls.

Expert knowledge within a company is the most valuable assets it has. Sometimes we don’t give priority to capturing that knowledge or sharing it effectively. When experts leave or move on, often the critical knowledge leaves too. This causes unnecessary rework and/or costly mistakes. In fact, according to the Panopto Workplace Knowledge and Productivity Report, US companies loose $47 million in productivity each year due to inefficient knowledge sharing. This presentation provides the recipe we used to share expert knowledge, before it’s too late. Recently, our company realized that we could be facing a recipe for disaster in the near future. Our workforce of technical experts is evolving and some of our master experts (possessing unique knowledge, skills and abilities) are retiring soon, or taking other roles within or outside of our company. We must ensure that we build teams that could remain effective, even if the expert became unavailable.

Many of us have faced the age old question: Should I go to graduate school, or enter the workforce? Whether you are just starting undergrad, preparing for life after your bachelor’s, or in grad school, it’s never too late to ask yourself this question. In fact, we both found the answer to this question halfway through grad school: we left our PhD programs to pursue our current careers in industry. Why? We both found our dream jobs. Join us as we discuss the different worlds of both academia and industry, and why we opted to pursue our dream careers before completing our PhDs. By recognizing ways to overcome the fears of leaving academia, you can choose your own path that aligns with your career and personal goals. Learn the pathways available to you and the tools we used to tackle the challenge of choosing our future.

We have all been in a situation where we feel terrified to take a step forward. It could be because of fear of the unknown or worry about our capabilities. For many of us, change is a difficult thing to overcome. At what point does the discomfort become intolerable? If we aren’t careful, it can hinder our personal and professional growth. What if we realized that change might be what we need to launch ourselves into success? According to psychology, each of us has a different response to change and understanding our personal levels of tolerance is critical in reframing our thinking. This session will provide listeners with the understanding of the psychology of the comfort zone and resources to rely on as they step forward seeking growth. With the right tools, we all can all look introspectively and understand how to navigate change based on our own tolerance levels.

The CDC estimates that 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with autism in North America. Many women in the height of their career growth may be challenged like I was when my daughter at 4 years old was diagnosed with autism in 2020. From pushing for an accurate diagnosis to deciding the right therapies and schools, I set goals with a team of helpers and had to stand back and assess milestones. As a lesbian couple in the South, we experienced extra hardship around access to care. In parallel, I began to trust my peers and team more, allowing me to grow into leading leaders with a team of 50 technical specialists. Join this talk to learn the basics of autism diagnostics and treatment in America, how to set goals with accountability, and the true work life balance that can come from finding and trusting your community.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of interest to water purveyors, environmental regulators, health officials, legislators – and the public. PFAS have been used in a wide variety of commercial and consumer products due to their non-stick, surfactant, and recalcitrant properties. They are resistant to natural degradation and persist in the environment, highlighting the importance of identifying sources and their risk to the community. Rapid adaptation of existing technologies to address this problem is essential, while new and emerging technologies are highly desired. Beyond engineered solutions, public outreach and communication is a top priority. With emphasis on emerging technologies as a force multiplier, this session encompasses an overall PFAS management approach to ensure clean drinking water: identifying sources and migration of PFAS to water supplies; detecting PFAS in water supplies; treating PFAS-impacted water; and communicating risk.

Humans are creatures of habit. Consistent habits create discipline, which helps us function to our maximum potential. Creating a habit to practice different forms of art in our daily routine will help us have a controlled breathing pattern and hence create a calm mind to ideate for innovation. Using different forms of art as a tool will enable us to manage our subconscious state to wire our conscious mind to be in a flow state for creative projects. In our current tech savvy lifestyle, we are wired for an instant flow of information, reaction, and gratification. Practicing art helps us develop and learn to choose response over reaction, pause for reflection, and lean towards intuition over a purely analytical mindset. Thoughts create magic, and art helps you create thoughts for manifesting beautiful situations. We will be practicing the mindfulness art form, enabling us to relax breathing patterns.

In this session we will discuss how to address this bias within your organization and partner with local community colleges for both successful students and a successful workforce, told from the perspective of a community college graduate and a 4-year graduate who took classes at a local community college.

Finding a mentor can be like the dating scene; some matches feel like they were made in heaven, and some feel like a complete mismatch. In both scenarios, valuable lessons can be learned. Like a good date can leave a lasting impression, a good mentor can impart wisdom and guidance to impact one’s life and career positively. Even when a mentorship relationship feels mismatched, there is still the potential for growth and development. It is essential to understand that not every mentor is the right fit, similar to every person is the right partner. Yet, the experience can help us better understand strengths and weaknesses and what we value in a mentor. You must be willing to put yourself out there, take risks, and learn from successful and unsuccessful experiences. Ultimately, the goal is to find a mentor who can challenge and inspire you to reach your full potential.

It is well known that Sally Ride was the first woman to go to space. It is less well-known that Ride’s life partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy, was a woman. Queer, lesbian, gay, trans, and non-binary people have always existed in the world of STEM and NASA. Those with queer identities have different approaches to navigating our male-dominated field. This panel of queer NASA JPL Engineers represents multiple different identities, ages, backgrounds, and experiences. We will discuss the challenges of being queer in engineering, how we choose to express our identities in the workplace, and how our experiences have changed over the course of our careers.
